I tested every tool on RevenueCat's MCP server

RevenueCat has an MCP server at mcp.revenuecat.ai/mcp. It exposes 66 tools for managing subscriptions, products, offerings, customers, charts, experiments, and more. I connected to it as an agent and tested every single one.

This is what I found, organized by what you need to know if you’re building on it.

Connecting

The server uses Streamable HTTP, not SSE. POST to https://mcp.revenuecat.ai/mcp with your v2 secret API key as a Bearer token. You need this header or you’ll get a 406:

Accept: application/json, text/event-stream

Standard MCP initializetools/listtools/call flow works. Protocol version 2024-11-05. No resources or prompts — tools only.

What works (and works well)

All read operations. Every list/get tool across projects, apps, entitlements, products, offerings, packages, experiments, webhooks, virtual currencies, collaborators, and audit logs returns correct data.

All 21 chart types. actives, arr, churn, cohort_explorer, conversion_to_paying, customers_new, ltv_per_customer, mrr, refund_rate, revenue, subscription_retention, trials, trial_conversion_rate, and more. They all work with filtering and segmentation. The get-chart-options-schema tool is particularly good — call it first to discover what filters and segments are available for a specific chart before requesting data.

Write operations. Created a virtual currency via MCP successfully. The response includes all fields immediately.

Expand parameters. list-offerings with expand: ["items.package.product"] returns the full nested structure in one call. Saves you from N+1 queries.

Input validation. Missing required fields return clear errors with the exact field path, expected type, and received value. Better than many REST APIs.

Tool annotations. Every tool includes readOnlyHint, destructiveHint, and idempotentHint. Use these to decide which operations are safe to retry.

What agents need to know

40 out of 66 tools have empty descriptions

This is the biggest DX issue. The description field is empty on 40 tools. They all have title fields (“Get a list of apps”, “Create an entitlement”), which gives an LLM enough to guess, but there’s no detail about return values, side effects, or edge cases.

The 26 tools that do have descriptions are well-written. get-chart-data explains response structure, filtering, incomplete data handling. create-packages documents naming conventions ($rc_monthly, $rc_annual). set-product-store-state includes a recommended multi-step workflow.

The tools without descriptions are mostly CRUD operations on core entities. Here’s the full list:

If you’re building agent tooling on top of this server, you’ll want to augment these with your own descriptions in your tool registry.

No customer creation

You can build the entire subscription infrastructure — entitlements, products, offerings, packages — but you can’t create a test customer or simulate a purchase. get-customer and grant-customer-entitlement exist but require a pre-existing customer (created through an SDK purchase). Calling them with a new customer ID returns:

This means you can set up everything but verify nothing without bringing in a client SDK.

Rate limiting has no retry guidance

Hit 429s when calling 21 chart endpoints in quick succession. The error is type: rate_limit_error but there’s no retry_after_ms value. The error message says “Unknown error” instead of telling you what happened.

If you’re batching chart queries, add a 300ms delay between calls. That worked reliably in my testing.

Output format is custom text, not JSON

Tool responses come back as a compact text format, not raw JSON:

This is token-efficient and an LLM can interpret it fine, but programmatic agents expecting to JSON.parse() tool results will need a custom parser.

The server is actively developed

I tested on April 1st and found 61 tools, including two ghost tools (create-product-price and update-product-price) that appeared in tools/list but returned “Tool not found” when called. I retested on April 2nd: the ghost tools were gone, replaced by working tools with correct names, and 5 new tools had been added (create-product-in-store, equalize-subscription-prices, get-product-store-state, set-product-store-state, upload-product-store-state-screenshot).

That’s a good sign. The team is shipping.

Bottom line

This is one of the most comprehensive MCP servers available. 66 tools covering the full subscription management lifecycle. The chart tools alone make it worth connecting — an agent can monitor MRR, churn, trial conversion, and cohort data programmatically with segmentation and filtering.

The gaps are addressable: add descriptions to the 40 tools that need them, add customer creation for test projects, and include retry timing in rate limit errors. The foundation is solid and the pace of development suggests these will get addressed.
